I have always wanted the people who work for the "Body Shop" to feel
the same way.

New rules and behavior standards(行为规范) for middle school students came out in March. The Middle School is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. Allen : I' ve never been a big fan of the bears, especially the vacation show. On my last trip to Disneyland(1999) we passed it by, because we didn't want to spend the time on something we didn't really enjoy. If we'd known it would be closed by our next visit, I'm sure we would have watched it one more time. I was just making the point that it wasn' t until Disney announced the closing that this feeling suddenly sprang(弹跳) up for the C'ountry Bear show at Disneyland.
But I think the idea of keeping some attractions open forever regardless of the number of visitors it gets is a mistake. We all have great memories of the Bears, but clearly very few kids today ( or I should say families today) are making those same memories from this show. That may be a sad fact, but it' s a fact. For whatever reason, the show doesn' t pull in the numbers. Isn' t it right to use the Country Bear space to bring in more popular attraction so that more kids today can make those magic memories of an attraction they like? Otherwise aren't we just telling the kids today that .they" have to" make great memories of the Bears, when it's obvious that the kids themselves are not enjoying the Bears as we did?
Roger: I am very disappointed that they have decided to retire the Country Bear Playhouse. I remember going to the show as a child, and still enjoying it as a teenager, and now as a young adult. It is true that there aren' t a lot of shows left at DL and with this one closing even less. Being at DL does require a lot of walking, and it is nice to have an attraction that is a place to sit and enjoy a good show. I understand that DL has to develop, but there has to be some history to the Disney-land that Walt Disney first designed. There should be some parts of DL that just never go away and this is one of them. By the time I have children it looks like there won' t be any attractions that I can say. I went as a child at the rate they are going.
Now the Bears are leaving. What I want to say is: stop trying to compete with everyone! DL is the best, because of attractions like the Country-Bears. If DL insists on destroying all of its magic to make way for the latest, well, then it might as well be just another theme park.
46. What news might get people talking about the problem of the Country Bears?
A. The Country Bear Playhouse will be closed.
B. There will be a new attraction for our guests at Disneyland.
C. The number of visitors to the Country Bear Playhouse is falling.
D. The Bears will retire because of old age and can' t give shows any more.

C. but I know that Disneyland will always be changing, and I accept that
D. and I am sad that the Bears will be leaving

The days of elderly women, doing nothing but cooking huge meals on holidays are gone. Enter the Red Hat Society---a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.
"My grandmothers didn't do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that," said Emily Cornette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society.
While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers(生育高峰期出生的人), and the same people who refused their parents' way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.
If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable (必然的). In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple(紫色的) clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.
"The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn' t go," said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.
"The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else," Cooper said, "Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves. " This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. "We' re a ladies' play group. It couldn' t be more simple," added Cooper' s assistant Joe Heywood.

B. are worried about getting old too quickly

53. It could be inferred from the text that members of the Red Hat Society are _________.
A. interested in raising money for social work
B. programmers who can plan well for their future
C. believers in equality between men and women
D. good at cooking big meals and taking care of others
54. Who set up the Red Hat Society?
A. Emily Cornette.
B. Ellen Cooper.
C. Jenny Joseph.
D. Joe Heywood.
55. Women join the Red Hat Society because _________.
A. they want to stay young
B. they would like to appear more attractive
C. they would like to have fun and live for themselves
D. they want to be more like their parents

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some famihes. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image (形象) of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.
An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive today' s young people seem to be about their families," said one member of the research team, "They' re expected to be rebellious (叛逆的)and selfish, but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There' s more negotiation(商议) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don' t want to rock the boat. "
So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. "My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall, "I always tell them when I' m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I' m doing, they' re fine with it. " Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. "Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I' d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that. "
Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, "Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over. "
56. What is the popular image of teenagers today?
A. They worry about school.
B. They dislike living with their parents.
C. They have to be locked in to avoid troubles.
D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.
57. The study shows that teenagers don't want to _________.
A. share family responsibility
B. cause trouble in their families
C. go boating with their family
D. make family decisions
58. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today's parents _________.
A. go to clubs more often with their children

59. According to the author, teenage rebellion _________.
A. may be a false belief

Ⅵ.教学设计
Teaching plan (one possible version) :
Step 1 :Warming up
1. The teacher tells a story of a Chinese at a Western dinner party who made a fool of himself due to the lack of cultural background. The story is: Once a Chinese was invited to an American dinner party. When he saw the napkin on the table, he tied it around his neck just as Chinese parents do to their children when they' re fed. As a result, he made a fool of himself.
2. The teacher then presents the tools on the table and shows how to put these knives and forks and how to use them. Then ask one student to imitate him.
3. Judge these manners. Which are good and which are bad?
◇ Can you speak with your mouth full?
◇ Can you use your hand to take food from the plate?
◇ Is it polite to touch the glasses when you toast?
◇Is it polite to persuade others to drink up after toasting?
4. Do Pre-reading, and discuss in groups.

Ask three students to finish this table.
Step 2 : Reading
1. Students do scanning for Exercise 2 (3 minutes for scanning). In what order will the following dishes be served at a Western dinner party? Dessert;drink;main course;starter soup.
Summarize the main idea of every paragraph.
2. With the following questions, listen to the tape and read carefully.
(1) Instead of a hot, damp cloth, napkin is often seen at the Chinese dinner party nowadays.
What sign do you think it implies? How can you use it?
(2)What do soft drinks refer to? Is white or red wine a soft drink?
(3) Do people say anything or keep silent when drinking to one' s health or drinking a toast?
What do you usually do if you drink a toast?
Ask some students to answer these questions.
