38. accident，event，incident，occurrence都指带来伤亡或事物损失的事故。常用词组：by accident 偶然地。

Nowadays people who drive automobiles or ride in them take various precautions against accidents. 现在，驾驶或乘坐汽车的人都会采取许多防范事故的措施。

event ：“事件、事变/大事”，一般用于比较重大的并且有前因可循的事情，因而多指国家和社会的事件，有时指特别重要的事情。常用词组：at all events 无论如何，in the event /in the event of 如果说/如果发生 (某种情况) 。

The government has made a new plan to save the nation in the event of nuclear war. 政府制定了一项关于万一爆发核战争如何拯救国家的计划。

incident：“事件、事变”，一般指不重要的、偶然性的小事，或是在大事件影响下发生的“附带事件”，也可以指可能引起国际纠纷的政治性 “事件、事端或事变。”

Repeated minor incidents led finally to the danger of open combat at the boundary.不断发生的小摩擦最终可能会导致边境上的公开武装冲突。
