7. protect against，protect from 在防御意义上，它们的用法很微妙。当防备的是一实实在在所面临的事物时，用from;若防备的是一个理论上的可能会发生 (也可能不发生) 的事

物时，用against。试比较：

(1) He raised his arm to protect his face from the blow.

(2) They have protected the warship against torpedoes.

句(1) 是针对他所面临的一击。句(2) 是针对的攻击还没有发生。再如，在保险业中表示投保意义时，用against，实际上也是针对某种可能的不利因素。

33.as a matter of fact，as good as，as it is 这三个短语都涉及“实际上，事实上” 的意思。as a matter or fact， “事实上、实际上”，有对比之意。“I thought you wouldn’t mind. "Well, as a matter of fact I don't, but you should have asked me first. ” “我原以为你不会在意。事实上我并不介意. 可你应该先问问我。

as good as 可用作副词性质的修饰语，没有对比的意味，表示 “实质上差不多等于”：He as good ns refused. “他实际上等于拒绝了。”The matter is as good as settled. “这事情就算

解决了.as it is，“事实上” 用于指出即将述说的是一个事实：I thought things would get better, but as it is they are getting worse. “我原以为情况会好起来，但事实是. 情况在变坏。”

34.as a whole ，on the whole 这两个短语很相像， 但用法有别。

as a whole 是把某事物当做一个整体来对待，不是各部分割裂开来对待，经常用作后置修饰语：We have had a few

setbacks, but the year as a whole has been a successful one for us. “我们有过一些挫折，但这一年总的说来我们是有成就的。”

on the whole强调方方面面作全面的考虑. 经常用作评注性状语：On the whole ，I like it. “总的说来，我喜欢它。”
