Work is a very important part of life in the Uniterd States. Americans spend most of their lives working .For most Americans ,their work defines them hey are what they do . What happens ,then, when a person can no longer work?

Most Americans stop working at the age of sixty-five or scventy and retire.because work is such an important part of life in this culture ,retirement can be very difficult .Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive .Of course, some people are happy to retire;but leaving one's job, whatever it is,is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retring .Retirement can also bring financial problems. Many people depend on Social checks every month .During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government .Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on , however, because prices are increasing very rapidly .Senior citizens, those over sixty-five,have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation (通货膨胀) is forcing prices higher each year ;Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance, but many senior citizens have to change their life-styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel, and other necessities.

Of course, many senior citizens are happy with their retirement,They have time to spend with their families or to enjoy their hobbics. Some continue to work part time;others do volunteer work. Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

Lawmakers are raising alarms about sleep-deprived doctors-and if you'ar concerned,so 'should you sleeep'is a funny thing. We'ar taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but a lot of us sleep less than that, and some of us actually sleep too much .A study reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to die of a stroke.

Doctors have their own special sleep problems.Resident doctors(住院医生)are famously sleep deprived. When I was training to become a doctor,it was not unusual to work 40 hours on end without rest .Most of us took it calmly, confident that we could still deliver the highest quality of medical care.

Maybe we shouldn't have been so sure of ourselves. An article in the journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the moring after 24 hours of sleeplessness,a person's motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is legally drunken.Curiously, doctors, who believe that operating under the influence of drinking is grounds for dismissal, often don't think twice about operating without enough sleep.

“I could tell you a horror story,”says Jaya  Agrawal,,president of the American Medical Student Association ."A doctor was operating after being up for over 36 hours ,and he almost fell asleep standing up and nearly face planted into the wound."

Agrawal's organization is supporting the Patient and Physician Safety and Protection Act of 2001,introduced last November Its key provisions include an 80-hour workweek and a 24-hour work-shift limit.

Most doctors, however, resist such interference. Dr. Charles Binkley, a senior surgery resident at the University of Michigan ,agrees that something needs to be done but believes doctors should be bound by their conscience ,not by the government.

The U.S. Controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors are on their own.

26.The study indicates that to sleep over 8 hours routinely and still feel tired is ________.

A.funny                                      B.unusual

C.normal                                    D.dangerous

27.Doctors hold that______.

A.it is natural for them to sleep less before operations

B.they should have enough sleep before their operations

C.they could manage an operation even without enough sleep

D.it is beneficial for them to drink some spirits after operating

A.doctors are prohibited from operating after drinking

B.doctors are trained to sleep less before their operations

C.doctors deprived of 24 hours of sleep will probably be fired

D.doctors often think carefully about operations with less sleep

29.It could be concluded from the passage that _______.

A.doctors believe they should be bound by conscience

B.most doctors do not want to be interfered while sleeping

C.the authorities should be responsible for doctors' lack of sleep

D.most doctors think they themselves could control sleeping hours

30. Most doctors' attitude towards the provisions is_________.

A.negative                                    B.positive

C.aggressive                                  D.indifferent

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.
Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family .Timing is another consideration .Some children get a weekly allowance.Others get a monthly allowance. In any case ,parents should make clear what ,if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money.

At first ,young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it.If they do this ,they they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget.Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance.

The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving.Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.

Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a goog idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.

Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want.Or they can save it.

Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice:you have to cut costs and plan for the future.

And also it is quite rude to converse with a companion in your native language and leave your American friends standing there feeling stupid because they can't understand the conversation. The Americans may also feel that you are talking about them or saying something you don't want them to know.If you to switch to your native language to explain something to a non-English-speaking companion, then at least translate for your American friends so that they don't feel left out.
