The Chinese Communist party's top officials have convened a secretive conclave in the seaside town of Beidaihe to finalise plans to hand power to a new generation of leaders after the most serious crisis to hit the party in years.

中国共产党最高层官员已在海滨度假胜地北戴河召开了秘密会议，以最终确定计划向新一代领导人移交权力。此前，中共遭遇了多年来最严重的危机。

President Hu Jintao and other top leaders arrived in the resort on Friday, according to three people familiar with the meeting. At the 18th party congress later this year, the party will unveil the slate of leaders who will run China for the next decade.

据三名知情人士称，中国国家主席胡锦涛和其他高级领导人上周五抵达北戴河。今年晚些时候召开的中共"十八大"上，中共将公布今后10年中国的领导层阵容。

One person familiar with the leadership succession said the party would probably cut the size of the politburo standing committee – the top decision-making body – from nine to seven seats.

熟悉中国领导层换届的一名人士称，中共很可能减少最高决策机构(中共中央政治局常委会)的人数，从目前的9人减至7人。

"The line-up will see mostly members who have ample experience, and for fresh faces you will have to wait until the 19th party congress," said another person.

"新的常委将主要由经验丰富的人组成，新面孔要等到十九大召开时才看得到，"另一人士表示。

Mr Hu has revived the Beidaihe tradition – which he suspended in 2003 after coming to power – as the party seeks to contain the political turmoil caused by the downfall of Bo Xilai. The charismatic former Chongqing party secretary was purged in April following the most severe power struggle to hit the party since the Cultural Revolution.

胡锦涛恢复了北戴河会议的传统，他主政后曾在2003年暂停了这一做法。目前中共正寻求遏制薄熙来落马所导致的政治动荡。富有魅力的薄熙来原来是重庆市委书记，他在今年4月份被停止职务。

On Thursday, Mr Bo's wife Gu Kailai faces trial over the alleged murder of a British businessman, in a case that was central to her husband's political demise. In a rare move, China has agreed to allow UK officials to attend the trial in spite of its politically sensitive nature.

The Beidaihe meeting has a long tradition. In the past, the party would move large parts of the bureaucracy to the resort town during the summer months.

Since the 17th party congress in 2007, Xi Jinping, the current vice-president, has been expected to succeed Mr Hu, while Li Keqiang, a vice-premier, would replace Wen Jiabao as premier.

The four leading candidates for the other five seats are thought to be Li Yuanchao, head of the powerful organisation department which oversees personnel moves, Wang Qishan, a vice-premier recognised for his economic expertise, Zhang Dejiang, a vice-premier who replaced Mr Bo as party secretary of Chongqing, and Yu Zhengsheng, the Shanghai party secretary.
