SW China quakes injure 21, affect 110,000 others

KUNMING, Dec. 28 -- A total of 21 people were injured and nearly 110,000 others affected by Friday's earthquakes in southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to the latest information of the provincial civil affairs department.
Two quakes, measuring 4.9 and 4.0 on the Richter Scale, hit Ruili city, on the China-Myanmar border, early Friday morning. The quakes destroyed 126 houses and damaged 63,940 others in the city. Schools were also affected.
The city's water conservancy, power, communication and transport facilities were also affected.
The city's party secretary, Yang Yueguo, said authorities were making every effort to treat the injured people and search for others at the same time. No casualties were reported.
Relief material, including tents, clothes, food and potable water have arrived in the stricken areas.
Another 4.3-magnitude quake hit Yiliang county, in the province's capital Kunming, around 2 a.m. on Friday. There were 1,209 houses damaged and 2,314 people affected.
Yunnan's neighboring province of Guizhou also suffered a 4.0-magnitude quake on Friday. No casualties and no damages were reported.
