It's a dead-end job.

It's a dead-end job. There's no future in this job. There's no chance of career advancement. I just do it for the money 。

对话

Marcus: I hate this place. I need a drastic career change.

Gordon: Why? I really like it here. We're always busy and people are dying to get our business.

Marcus: How can you say that? It's a dead-end job.

Gordon: Well, I should hope so. We are undertakers after all.

It's a dead-end job。 People are dying to get our business。

(1) I'm dying for a sleep.(我很想睡一觉)。(2) I'm dying to see him.(我很想见见他)。

(1) There was a sign indicating that the street was a dead end.(或indicating that it was a dead-end street)(有标志显示那是一条死巷)。(2) Our investigation has come to a dead end.(我们的调查走进了死胡同)。

When I realized I was in a dead-end job, I decided to quit.(我发觉工作没有前途,决定辞职)。

I'm in a dead-end job之类。 (1) I've reached the highest level possible in the company(公司没有办法提供我进一步升迁的职位了)。(2) I would like to move to a company with better promotion prospects.(我想转业到晋升机会较大的公司任职)。

It's because of money./Money is the reason./It's a matter of money。

What do you do?

What's your work (job)?/What's your occupation? /What's your title? (你的职衔是什么?)/Where are you employed?(你在哪儿受聘?)

对 话

Joseph: I haven't seen you since school. What have you been doing?

Ian: I've been very busy with my job. I travel throughout the city everyday.

Joseph: That sounds fascinating. What do you do?

Ian: I'm a senior disposable waste management consultant.

Joseph: That's impressive, I thought you'd only end up as a “garbage- man” or something.

约瑟夫问老同学伊恩:What do you do? I'm a senior disposable waste management consultant。

一般而言,What do you do?或What does your wife do? What do you do at weekends?(你周末通常做什么?) I usually go hiking with my wife.(我常常和内子去远足)等等。

问人家的职业, What do you do?或What do you do for a living? What's your job/occupation/trade?或What line (of business/work)are you in? Two of a trade never agree是说‘两个同业的人,不会合得来’。Line是‘行业’,I am in the catering/public relations line即‘我从事外烩业/公共关系业务’。

回答What's your job? I'm a dentist/salesman(我是牙医/售货员)等,但千万不要说My job is a dentist之类:你可以做牙医,你的工作(job)却不可以做牙医。I'm a senior disposable waste management consultant即‘我是用后即弃废物的资深管理顾问’,其实是捡破烂。捡破烂者,英文叫ragpicker(直译是‘捡破布者’)。 I earn my living as a totter.(我靠捡破烂维生)。

I got a great job offer.

I got a great job offer.(我获得一份很好的工作)。一份梦寐以求的工作可称为A dream job,难得的事业机会则叫A great career opportunity。

对话

Amy: You look pleased with yourself.

Joe: I am. I got a great job offer and I'm very excited.

Amy: Great! What did they offer you?

Joe: Five hundred dollars to never set foot in their office again. The way I looked was turning their customers away. I could make a career out of this.

You look pleased with yourself.(你看来得意洋洋)。 I got a great job offer。 He appeared as pleased as Punch when he got the job即‘他获得那份工作,看来洋洋得意’。

A great job offer的offer是‘提出’、‘给予’的意思, I got a great job offer即‘我获得一份很好的工作’。 His father has got him a fat/plum job in the government(他父亲帮他找到一份待遇优渥的政府工作)。 She has a cushy job, and spends much of her time in the office reading novels.(她的工作可轻松,经常在办公室里读小说)。

(1) The president came into office four years ago.(总统四年前就职)。(2) I would like to apply for the position of Advertising Manager.(我想申请广告经理一职)。(3) I hold a blue-collar/white collar job.(我担任蓝领/白领工作)。(4) He had a successful career as a teacher.(他长期从事教学,十分成功)。
