When you want two people to know each other, you should introduce them. For example, if you are with your friends and you meet with someone you know, it is always polite to introduce them to one another.
In the west, it is common to introduce woman before men, old people before young people and people with higher positions before people with lower position. You should introduce a man to a woman, a younger person to an older person of the same sex; an unmarried woman to a married woman, and children to adults.
The politest form of introduction is in the form of an enquiry. “Mrs. Street, May I introduce Miss Li?” This is a very common form to use when introducing a friend to an older person. When someone comes into a group of people it is customary to mention his name first and then the names of the members of the group. You might say, “I should like you all to meet Mr. Smith, who has just come from New York.” A man always rises for an introduction. But it is always right for an older man to remain seated when a young man is introduced to him. The hostess always rises for an introduction.
When one is introduced to someone it is very common to shake hands, or smile and say “How do you do?” or add the person’s name, as: “How do you do, Mr. Smith?”
Sometimes it is necessary for you to introduce yourself. For instance at a meeting or gathering it is all right to introduce yourself. to a fellow-student, or to one of the same sex and position. He should answer, “I’m John Smith. How do you do?” or “Excuse me, I don’t think I know you. May I introduce myself? My name is Jack Hill. You may call me Jack.”
