In England, in addition to the long summer holiday, there are a few weeks at Christmas and Easter. During these holidays the students can go home. Many of them arrange to travel in July, August and September, partly for pleasure and partly for study. Some go to France or other European countries to study foreign languages, especially to get practice in conversation; others go mountain-climbing in the Alps, or visit places of historical interest. The students of some universities, who have to earn money to pay for their education, spend the summer doing various kinds of work. But it is not always easy to find employment.

Scientists hope that if we can discover how the brain works the better use we will be able to put it to. For example, how do we learn language? Some children learn to speak and read and write when they are very young compared to average children. But scientists are not sure why this happens. They are trying to find out whether there is something about the way we teach language to children which in fact prevents children from learning sooner

Along with the many recent startling advancements in medical technology have come a number of complex moral questions which beg to be answered. We now have the ability to prolong the life of the human body for a very long time. But do patients and their families have rights to curtail cruel and unusual medical treatment that stretches life beyond its normal limits? This dilemma has produced a great ripple effect in history. Is the extension of life an unquestionable goal in itself, regardless of the quality of that life? Modern scientific technology has forced doctors to reevaluate the exact meaning and purpose of their profession.

Diligence is the key to success. It means persistent work and does not mean that we are to work ourselves all day and night without rest, food and sleep. The true meaning of diligence is the careful use of time for the purpose of improvement, or to work persistently without any waste of time. It’s a serious mistake to believe in luck. If there is any luck at all, it never comes to a lazy person. For example, if a farmer tills his land one day and sleeps away all his hours the next, then the best of luck would not bring him anything. There would be no harvest for him at all because laziness makes people useless.
